Shape Up Australia
Shape Up Australia is a new Australian Government overweight and obesity branding initiative designed to help consumers cut through the cluttered healthy lifestyle messaging environment and draw them towards credible, evidence-based obesity prevention and healthy lifestyle information, services and programs.
The initiative will be administered by the Australian National Preventive Health Agency.
Why is a national brand for obesity prevention needed?
Australia is one of the most overweight of the developed nations. Early findings from the Australian Health Survey 2012 show that 63.4% of Australian adults are overweight or obese.Obesity has been identified as a key risk factor for preventable morbidity and mortality from diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, some cancers, osteoarthritis, respiratory conditions and depression.
Health problems related to excess weight impose considerable costs on individuals, as well as families, communities and the broader economy. Evidence suggests that obese individuals have medical costs approximately 30% greater than their healthy weight peers.
Through the Shape Up Australia initiative, the Australian Government is seeking to strengthen and better coordinate obesity prevention efforts across Australia.
How does my organisation become involved?
Over the coming months more details will be posted to this website on opportunities to partner with the Australian Government under the Shape Up Australia initiative to deliver key messages, amplify and extend brand awareness, and drive healthy lifestyle behaviour change.
